Quelling Dissent, the Brandon Raub Story

Veteran kidnapped by the Feds for exercising his 1st amendment right

It is truly amazing the rapid decline of our liberties in this post-9/11 world. Not since the days of slavery has there been such oppression and authoritarianism. However, is it not ironic that somehow the modern day slaves, American citizens, believe they are free?

I remember distinctly in December of 2011 before the NDAA was passed that all the authoritarians in the House and Senate that supported it stated time and again that section 1021 of that bill would not apply to US citizens. It was not until a spotlight had been put on this particular passage that they admitted it could be used against Americans. To add insult to injury our Liar in Chief, Barack Obama, said he would veto it but as we know he signed it on New Years Eve under the cover of an upcoming holiday.

As the pertinent passages of section 1021 states:

(a) In General- Congress affirms that the authority of the President to use all necessary and appropriate force pursuant to the Authorization for Use of Military Force (Public Law 107-40; 50 U.S.C. 1541 note) includes the authority for the Armed Forces of the United States to detain covered persons (as defined in subsection (b)) pending disposition under the law of war.
(b) Covered Persons- A covered person under this section is any person as follows:
(1) A person who planned, authorized, committed, or aided the terrorist attacks that occurred on September 11, 2001, or harbored those responsible for those attacks.
(2) A person who was a part of or substantially supported al-Qaeda, the Taliban, or associated forces that are engaged in hostilities against the United States or its coalition partners, including any person who has committed a belligerent act or has directly supported such hostilities in aid of such enemy forces.
(c) Disposition Under Law of War- The disposition of a person under the law of war as described in subsection (a) may include the following:
(1) Detention under the law of war without trial until the end of the hostilities authorized by the Authorization for Use of Military Force.

It is interesting to note that within the President’s signing statement, he admits that through post-9/11 legislation that he already has the power to detain anybody he wishes to. Furthermore, he promised not to use this power against American citizens. This of course brings us to the recent case of Brandon Raub a former Marine and veteran of Iraq and Afghanistan from Chesterfield, VA.
